Photography from an alternative business event in London

Over the past few years, I’ve noticed a subtle but significant shift in the business events I photograph across London.

The traditional conference format hasn’t disappeared entirely, but it’s increasingly being replaced by something different. Something more human.

Instead of full-day schedules packed with presentations and sales pitches, many organisations are opting for shorter, more focused events. The day often starts with good coffee, fresh pastries, fruit and granola rather than registration queues and branded tote bags. Attendees gather around tables rather than rows of chairs. Conversations begin naturally, long before any formal agenda starts.

The emphasis is no longer on talking at people. It’s about bringing people together. There seems to be a growing recognition that some of the most valuable moments at an event happen between the presentations rather than during them. The conversations sparked over breakfast. The shared experiences exchanged around a roundtable. The unexpected introduction that leads to a new opportunity months later.

As a result, many events are becoming more interactive and participant-led. Rigid PowerPoint marathons are giving way to discussions, workshops and collaborative sessions where attendees are encouraged to contribute rather than simply listen.

The atmosphere is noticeably different, too. The suit-and-tie formality that once defined many corporate events is often absent. In its place are relaxed environments designed to encourage authentic relationship-building, peer-to-peer learning and genuine conversation. People arrive not because they have to, but because they want to connect with others facing similar challenges and opportunities.

Business event photography at the Sustainable Workspace, London

Recently, I had the opportunity to photograph one such event at the Sustainable Workspace in Westminster, Central London. With sweeping views across to the Houses of Parliament, the venue provided a fitting backdrop for a gathering of around 50 industry professionals.

Yet despite the iconic setting, there was none of the rigid formality often associated with the area. The room was filled with conversation, collaboration and curiosity. Groups formed and reformed throughout the morning. Ideas were shared openly. Experiences were exchanged. Connections were made.

From a photographer’s perspective, these events are a joy to document.

The interactions are genuine, the expressions unforced and the moments authentic. Rather than capturing people sitting passively in darkened conference rooms, I’m able to document the energy that emerges when like-minded people come together to learn, share and grow.

And perhaps that’s what makes these modern business events so effective. They recognise that while presentations can inform us, it’s conversations that connect us.
