A Photo Workshop: ‘Learning to Shoot in Manual’ Part One

This 90-minute in-person photography workshop is aimed at people who own a digital camera like a DSLR, mirrorless, or bridge camera & want to unpack some of its amazing potential in a real-life situation.

We will take a walk together & whilst walking we will start to explore how to operate our cameras in manual mode, make correct exposures & understand the photography basics of Aperture, Shutter Speed & ISO.

You’ll start the session with your camera firmly set to auto. As we talk about the functions & features you’ll be able to try & test them out in real-life situations. I will be there to guide you, discuss & review your images, help troubleshoot & answer questions.

By the end of the session, you’ll have the confidence & understanding to start controlling your camera rather than have it control you!!

During this session you will learn:
  • How to understand different light sources.
  • Aperture, Shutter Speed & ISO – what they are & what they do?
  • The exposure triangle & how to get the desired exposure by balancing Aperture, Shutter Speed & ISO.
  • As we are shooting I will also discuss some of the principles of good composition.
  • A digital download will be available after the session.
Who is this photography workshop for?

This workshop is aimed at people who have a good quality camera with manual capabilities but who are stuck on Auto, unsure of what all the buttons, dials & controls do. I will walk & talk you through the basics to help you leave Auto Mode behind & take full control over your photo taking.

Most DSLRs, mirrorless & bridge cameras are suitable as long as they allow full manual control by selecting M (manual) on the mode dial or through the camera menu. If you are unsure whether your camera has manual control please contact me.

Cost

£60 for a 90-minute workshop including a digital download of the session.

A Photo Workshop: ‘Learning to Shoot in Manual’ Part Two

Understand focusing, metering, histograms & white balance

This 90-minute in-person photography workshop on learning to shoot in manual mode is a continuation of part one & is aimed at people who have completed the first session & want to learn more. And those who already have a good understanding of Aperture, Shutter Speed & ISO but want to delve deeper into their camera’s functionally.

During this second session, we will unpack more of your camera’s potential in a real-life situation. We will explore the different focusing modes, metering, histograms & white balance allowing you to really utilise your digital camera. There will be time & opportunities for questions whilst we walk.

Like in the first session, as we talk about the functions & features of your camera, you’ll be able to try them out in real-life situations. I will be there to guide you, discuss & review your images & help troubleshoot. Walking in the park gives us options of shooting landscapes, wide shots, close-up photos, images of details & if you ask nicely I may even pose so that you can practice shooting portraits!

By the end of this second workshop, you’ll understand the different focus modes on your camera & when to use them. You’ll be able to use your camera to metre & set the correct exposure for your desired photo & you will know what tools are available in-camera to help you achieve this.

You will no longer be a slave to auto mode!

During this session you will learn:
  • All about the different focusing modes & when to use them.
  • How to meter to get a correct exposure & what all the different metering modes do.
  • What the histogram is & how to understand one & use the information.
  • All about White Balance.
  • As we are shooting I will also continue discussing some of the principles of good composition.
  • A digital download will be available after the session.
Who is this photography workshop for?

The Details

Where will the walks take place?

These are photo walks & photography workshops in Croydon, London & the surrounding area. Croydon has an abundance of parks & green spaces from South Norwood Country Park to the Addington Hills. We are spoilt for choice! I will pick a location that has a coffee shop nearby so that we can start with coffee & a chat.

I am happy to travel outside of Croydon to a park or green space nearer to you if you are not local to Croydon. There may be a small additional charge to cover travel costs.

When do these workshops take place?

For outdoor worships spring, summer & early autumn is the ideal time. During the winter months, we may spend a little longer in the warm coffee shop & a little less time outside. Various times of day are available.

What if it rains?

The life of a photographer means that we are often shooting in the rain & having to adapt & change plans. But don’t worry, these are meant to be fun & enjoyable workshops & so I will happily reschedule your outdoor photo workshop if it rains!
